Morning Modelbuch (8/28/2018)
Oh look, I found another rabbit hole! Interestingly enough, if you spend some time looking for the 1523 modelbuch printed by Johann Schonsperger the younger in Augsburg that is listed as Lotz 1 (I still haven’t found an easily accessible copy,) and you may have mentioned armor etching design recently, you will turn up the etched, printer, and armor designer Daniel Hopfer who was also working out of Augsburg. And now I need this book https://hnanews.org/hnar/reviews/daniel-hopfer-ein-augsburger-meister-der-renaissance/ . The Met mentions Lotz’ discussion of the possible use of some of the Schonsperger designs in the Hopfer armor design workshop in their discussion of Lotz 5. Linked below. I’ve cropped some of the plates I found interesting and haven’t looked at before. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/354716
Limping through research materials in German a phrase at a time really makes me really wish I had gone beyond German 2 in high school. But who knew I would ever need it?
