Looking at portraits can get you to the most interesting places. This portrait miniature of Cipriano de Rore by Hans Muelich is part of a manuscript of motets. De Rore was one of the most influencial composers of madrigals in the 1540/50’s and there is a large amount of his music available if you too want to disappear down that rabbit hole. http://www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Cipriano_de_Rore The manuscript with the portrait is at the Bavarian National Library https://www.digitale-sammlungen.de/en/view/bsb00103729?page=1

His collar is beautifully detailed and in the style of the pattern books from the late 1550’s. I’ve included some of the patterns from the Mets’s copy of Isepo Foresto’s 1557 _Splendore delle virtuose giovani_ (Lotz 93.) https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/349915
