Interesting yellow embroidery in a portrait of a young nobleman from the first quarter of the 16th century by an unknown painter. https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2019/master-paintings/north-italian-school-first-quarter-of-the-16th

The patterns are like those in Pellegrino’s 1530 _La Fleur de la Science de Pourtraicture_ with the intertwining arabesques of the moresque style. It, like many of the other pattern books, was reprinted in the late 19th/ early 20th century. It is frequently classified as the Midgeon facsimile as Gaston Midgeon, the curator of the Department of Middle Ages, Renaissance and Modern Art Objects of the Louvre at the time, wrote the introduction, in 1908. It was, however, edited by Jean Schemit and put out by the Libraire de la Science de l’Histoire de l’Art Francais. The reprint was 300 numbered copies. The scan of #7 is available at https://bibliotheque-numerique.inha.fr/collection/item/48521-la-fleur-de-la-science-de-portraiture-patrons-de-broderie-facon-arabique-et-italique

Because the book will show up under both Midgeon and Schemit, I own two of the series, copies number 65 and 108.
