I knew the detailed figural patterns in Iseppo Foresto’s 1564 “Splendore delle virtuose giovani” were intended as lace and cutwork designs, but I don’t know enough about lace to quite understand how that might look when worked up. Seeing a similar scene of floral exuberance surrounding intricate pictorial elements in this 17th century insertion at the Met rather knocked me back on my heels. It is exquisite.
