Morning Modelbuch (6/16/2020)
I’ve been finding references to the original woodcut inspiration for a friend who has been embroidering tiny versions of some of the pieces in the Oxburgh hangings. As a result, I was reminded of a kind of fun reference that appears on the title page of Matthias Mignerak’s 1605 _La Pratique de l’Aiguille_. If you look down on the tiny pillow bottom center there is a pattern of marguerites and a sun. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/354009
The original design was published in Claude Paradin’s 1557 emblem book _ Devises Heroiques_ https://www.emblems.arts.gla.ac.uk/french/dual.php?id1=sm816-p041&type1=2&id2=sm816-p042&type2=2
It was used as a badge by Marguerite of France and then by Mary Stuart. Mary embroidered it and it is part of the Oxburgh Hangings. http://www.marie-stuart.co.uk/embroidery.htm
