I’m having a morning where I’m going off the beaten path and disagreeing with Arthur Lotz. I’m working on a long form blog post regarding Lotz numbers 52, 53, and 54. Or it may become a paper. I’m not certain yet. I think I found an online copy of Jacques/Jakob Honervogt’s book that Lotz numbered 54. It matches the description and the sample plates in Lotz are in the book. I just don’t agree to it being an embroidery pattern book. I mean, it could be used for that, but it is much more of book for goldworkers. That wouldn’t bother me if Lotz included the other goldsmithing ornament books, but he excludes Foillet and Pellegrino and several others that mention their use for embroiderers in the title. I’ve also found several books designed for locksmiths while digging through this ornament quandary that I’ll be sharing as they have gorgeous borders that would be appropriate for textile use.
