Morning Modelbuch (9/7/2019)

An Italian or French processional banner, embroidered in silk and metal thread on silk, dated 1516 with a sun and fleur-d-lis. Accession number 46.156.139 at the Met. The object predates the pattern books, but I think it is important to point out that the patterns in the books aren’t just created out of nowhere, but they rather express, transmit, and extend the design vocabulary already in use.

_Modelbuch aller art nehens und stickens_ by Christian Egenolff, originally published in 1535. Lotz #13, this particular version was published in 1593, considerably after Egenolff’s death, by his heirs. Once again I find it fascinating to see the books published and republished over and over again. https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b105480092
