Morning Modelbuch (6/19/2019)

This 16th century Italian piece of drawnwork/ punto tirato at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, isn’t a close copy of the deer and fountain motif we see in the pattern books, including Jobin, Latomus, and Siebmacher. It does, however, show how the designs are in the consciousness of artisans. Whether it is from earlier traditional designs that were redrawn for the books or designs seen in other forms and reproduced by the artisans.

(Is it just me, or do the deer remind anyone else of The Grinch’s dog Max with an antler tied to his head so he can pretend to be a reindeer?)

Pattern is from Johann Siebmacher’s 1604 _Newes Modelbuch_
