Morning Modelbuch (5/3/2019)

I’m absolutely charmed by this workbag made by 10 year old “I.S.” in 1669. I may need to add it to my ever expanding project list. I really like the mix and match style of this part of the 17th century, with the adorable animals as well as the floral slips and urns stuffed into the space. I connect with whimsy of it all. I also like that the red is crewel wool worked in double running stitch on linen.

The discussion of the workbag at the museum is pretty extensive and well worth a look. (Accession number 2006.263) https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/231822

I’m also interested by how earlier motifs have developed and are being used on the bag The border bears a lot of resemblance to one from Herman Gulferrich’s (who swiped it from Hoffman) 1553 _Modelbuch new, aller Art, Nehens und Stickens_. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/684143

The Met’s discussion of the border (which is adapted from 2008’s “Twixt Art and Nature” ) points to Matteo Pagano’s 1554 _Ornamento delle belle & virtuose donne_ https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/660200
