Morning Modelbuch (4/30/2019)
I found this Portrait of a Young Woman from the workshop of Hans Holbein dated 1540-45 interesting for the whitework edging. The painting is heavily restored, but the technical notes specifically point to the neckline as being original and in good repair. Accession number 49.7.30
The flowered vine at the neck has a lot of similarities to both the Bronzino style portrait and the extant flower textile we looked at over the last few days. It also has similarities to a pattern in the 1544 version of Peter Quentel’s _Ein new kunstlich Modelbuch_ at the Met. The cuffs have a pattern from the same book. It is a simple interlace, but when stacked with gold borders as it is, it turns out anything but simple.
