Many of the extant pieces of needlework we have are ecclesiastical due to a variety of factors, but you dont see all that many of them turn up in portraits. That made this portrait by Scipione Pulzone of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese from 1579 in the Palazzo Buonaccorsi really interesting. Farnese was a noted collector of sculpture and very active patron of living artists. His portrait has some lovely lace. It is similar to some of the Vecellio patterns that were republished. This plate is from Lotz 121, Giovanni Ciotti _Prima parte de’ fiori, e disegni di varie sorti di ricami moderni_ dated 1591 http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b10548045x https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Alessandro_farnese.jpg
