Morning Modelbuch (2/9/2019)

I really want the baby blankets (in a king size) featured in Tiberio di Tito’s 1617 Portrait of Leopold de Medici as Baby. Sure, there’s elaborate goldwork and embroidery, but look at the prairie points on the bottom blanket! It bears at least a passing resemblance to a quilt my kids might have had– if we had a few million dollars to throw around. The gold embroidery on the bottom looks like a pattern from as early as Schonsperger’s _Ein New Modelbuch_ https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/354660 The ogee shaped medallions are similar to woven brocade patterns that go through the early books, turn up in the moresque designs and continue into the lace books. I’ve included one from Matteo Pagano’s 1546 _Spechio di pensieri delle belle et Virtudiose donne_. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/354982

The di Tito portrait was mentioned in The Met’s 1920 Bulletin article about the first exhibition of Ida Schiff’s lace collection, talking about the pillow, which has the hearts also seen in Schonsperger, so I went looking. It’s in the Pitti Palace, and not online, but Wikipedia has an image. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tiberio_di_Tito_-_Prince_Leopoldo_de_Medici_in_a_Cradle_-_WGA22723.jpg
