An interesting discussion got me thinking about just how few dragon patterns exist in the pattern books. There’s one in Siebmacher and another associated with St. Barbara that turn up in a few in the 1530’s, but not many others. There are, however some interesting grotesque heads that are rather dragon-like. Grotesque head patterns on a mid 16th century Italian bed spread at the Hermitage. Listed as using Italian cross stitch and double running stitch in silk in linen. There is a pattern in Swartzenberger that is very like the smaller outside border that I should probably compare another time.
