Morning Modelbuch (3/4/2020)
Nicholas Hilliard’s Portrait of an Unknown Woman dated 1595. Watercolor on vellum, stuck to a playing-card overpainted with brown watercolor, height 73mm, width 53mm, accession number 3898.
The Fitzwilliam Museum’s Collections Explorer/search function is down for reconstruction, so I’ve linked the miniature from their print portal. https://www.fitzwilliamprints.com/image/701898/hilliard-nicholas-unknown-lady
I pulled some patterns from Giovanni Ciotti’s _Prima Parte de’ Fiori, e Disegni di varie sorti di Ricami_ dated 1591 (Lotz # 121) because the plates were published in England as part of Barley’s _A booke of curious and strange inventions, called the first part of needleworkes_ in 1596. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/347578
