I decided to mix it up a little and start linking to books I don’t tend to match up much and picking a favorite pattern or two to showcase. Today’s book is Lotz #156, James Boler’s _The Needle’s Excellency_ first published in 1631. The date Lotz gives is 1634, but that is the 10th edition. The patterns come from Siebmacher and it is introduced by John Taylor’s poem, “In Praise of the Needle,” so the book is more usually attributed to Taylor.

Curious Works Press put out a book of just the poem with annotations by Kathleen Epstein in 1995 if you’re interested in that. I put my copy of the 1886 reprint of Siebmacher in the picture since the two pieces pretty much equal Boler’s book.
