Morning Modelbuch (8/7/2019)
I started stitching my first Elizabethan coif 12 years ago today. Pulling it out and looking at it made me realize, as much as I say disparaging things about my embroidery skills, they have improved over the years. I was encouraged by that. As it is sort of an anniversary, I decided to share a coif with peas and heartsease since they are two of my favorite motifs. This English 17th century coif was sold at Christies in 2012. https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/textiles-costume/a-ladys-coiffe-english-early-17th-century-5394388-details.aspx
These types of simple embroidery patterns turn up in Richard Shorleyker’s Shole-House for the Needle_. Finding a free and accessible copy of the book is a little difficult, but the Belgian Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) has several pages available to search on their images database BALaT (Belgian Art Links and Tools.)
