Morning Modelbuch (8/3/ 2019)

I thought I would do something a little different today. I haven’t found a copy of Passarotti’s 1591 _Libro di Lavorieri_ available online. There are three copies. One is in the Kunstbibliothek, one in the Palazzo Davanzati in Florence, and the third in the Aurelio Saffi Public Library in Forli, Italy. (There is a 2016 publication of the one in Forli that I gushed about when I bought my copy. Highly recommended.)

But, there were a series of laces made from the patterns in the early 20th century. They were featured in Elisa Ricci’s 1929 book _Merletti e Ricami della Aemilia Ars_. Several of the pieces were sold at auction in 2016, 2017, and 2018. So, while I can’t link to an example of the patterns, here are some modern interpretations of them featuring the auction pictures. I’ve included links and you can see much more detail there.

It is important to point out, again, that these are modern versions and they are interpretations of the patterns. For example, the auction text for lot 261 has the creatures up top described as kangaroos, but they are distinctly wyverns in the pattern. Nonetheless, they are beautiful laces and give an idea of what some of the patterns look like.
