Another classic text on the subject _Needlework through the ages : a short survey of its development in decorative art, with particular regard to its inspirational relationship with other methods of craftsmanship_ by Mary Symonds Antrobus and Louisa Preece
Just to keep it on topic, the section on 16th century embroidery begins on page 234 and mentions of modelbucher and herbals are on page 245 of the book.
