Morning Modelbuch (3/29/2019)
A French embroidered valance dated about 1560. It is red silk satin embroidered with silk. There are 3 pieces surviving, each about 12 by 13 inches. They would have all been together as part of a set of bed hangings. The museum points out that the design was probably taken from a pattern book but an exact match isn’t known. http://m.vam.ac.uk/collections/item/O118393/valance-unknown/ if that doesn’t work, they are items T.219-1981, T.219b-1981, and T.219c-1981
The designs have some similarities to several in Jacques Androuet du Cerceau’s 1550 _ Petite Grotesques_ https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/349121
