Morning Modelbuch (1/31/2019)

I wanted to look at the embroidery in today’s painting for a couple of reasons. First, because it is Moroni and just so beautifully and clearly painted. The second reason is that while it doesn’t match up exactly with any particular pattern, it demonstrates how individual pieces of patterns could be combined. There’s a fountain/urn/planter, fleurs, flat ribbons that sometimes have mottos on them in other patterns, and a lovely set of balanced scrolls. All the pieces can be found somewhere. As someone who often mixes and matches to individualize a pattern, I love seeing the synergy. Giovanni Battista Moroni’s “A Gentleman in Adoration before the Madonna” dated around 1560. https://www.nga.gov/collection/art-object-page.255.html

And while it isn’t a match at all, here is a very nice fountain/urn pattern. _L’honesto essempio del uertuoso desiderio che hanno le Donne di nobil ingegno_ by Matteo Pagano 1550 https://archive.org/details/Lhonesto/page/n23
