Morning Modelbuch (1/6/2018)
I am once again eating my words. I’ve said im not really a sampler fan, but I truly love this 17th century band sampler . The patterns are from Johann Siebmacher’s 1604 _Diese nachfolgende Moedel koennen auff mancherley Arth genahet werden_.
Since this is the second time I found a sampler I liked, I decided to look a little harder. This one is part of the Dr. Douglas Goodhart Sampler collection. He collected over 300 samplers and then eventually focused on 16th and 17th century English samplers. The UK National Trust has over 100 images of them available to browse. About 130 of the samplers are stored and displayed at Montacute House. I went searching through the images and have come to the conclusion that I like 16th and 17th century samplers in general, it’s the later ones I’m not as excited about. So now I have hours of fun ahead of me looking more deeply at the collection. The images on the National Trust’s site aren’t great, but you can order better ones. There are also some books published on the Goodhart samplers. The one put out in 2008 appears to be spectacular, but is out of print and pretty pricey.
