Morning Modelbuch (11/25/2018)

This is just me wondering out loud. I was looking at Holbein’s portrait of Thomas Howard and noticed the combination of positive and negative techniques in the blackwork band at his neck. There are several modelbuch patterns with both positive and negative versions of the pattern side by side, but I always sort of assumed they were intended to be used separately. Maybe not? The portrait isn’t exactly that because it isn’t the same knot used in both cases, but now I want to look for more like it.

Pages are from Peter Quentel _Eyn new kunstlichboich_ dated 1529. Portrait is Thomas Howard, third Duke of Norfolk by Hans Holbein the Younger dated 1539.
