Since we were looking at early S patterns used much later yesterday, I thought I’d post this beaded purse dated 1628. http://m.vam.ac.uk/collections/item/O78800/purse-unknown/
And just to further cloud things, here’s the S pattern from one of the Fustat textiles from Islamic Egypt in the Ashmolean dated before 1517, pointing to where the designs came from before they were incorporated into the books.
