Morning Modelbuch (9/20/2018)
Some lovely pomegranates and other vegetal vines from Vinciolo. These are from a copy with multiple editions at the BNF http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b10548003c?rk=214593;2
The Met has a copy titled _Les Secondes Oeuvres Et Subtiles Inventiones_ from 1603 with many of the same borders not seen in other copies. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/662882
These actually answer a question that I’ve had for awhile. This particular book has a huge selection of pattern darned designs (lacis) often squares. Vinciolo was brought to France to work for Catherine de Medici whose favorite form of lacemaking was lacis. She had hundreds of worked squares in two trunks of her inventory. I always wondered why her lace designer didn’t do more designing for her preferred style. Apparently he did. I was just looking at the wrong book. Kinda cool to find them.
