Morning Modelbuch (5/19/2018)
Dominico de Franceschi’s _Serena, Opera Nuoa do Recami_ from 1564 is pretty much all the same patterns from other books. If you’ve seen Quentel, you’ve seen these. A couple caught my eye, so I’m sharing them. The roses, hearts and interlace would be a great as a tent stitch table carpet. I’m intrigued by how the knots are both intricate and chunky simplicity sketched out by blocks of stitches rather than swirling lines. A PDF of the book can be dowloaded here. https://sachsen.digital/werkansicht/dlf/163252/29/#
What makes Franceschi a little more interesting is the republication by Ferdinando Ongania in 1879. Ongania was a Venetian photographer fascinated with the Venetian printing industry. He published a book on the subject, _Early Venetian Printing Illustrated_ as well as republishing several modelbuch. His most well known work is his own art, a book of photographs of the streets and canals of Venice. Figured I’d share a couple of his photographs just because the context is interesting.
This is also a new link for me since I haven’t previously found an online copy. So I get to edit the big list on my blog. Hoping to do a clean up of the page some time this weekend.
